Make tasty Dalgona Whipped Matcha latte at home easily

Inspired by Dalgona coffee, this creamy and fluffy concoction of whipped matcha topped over hot or cold milk makes a great comforting drink that’s easily made at home.

You might have heard of a trending creation called Dalgona coffee that took the internet by storm during the quarantine period of the COVID-19 pandemic. This whipped coffee recipe that comprises very few daily pantry ingredients such as water, sugar and instant coffee mix got everyone on the bandwagon almost immediately.

We experimented the recipe with a twist of matcha and found it super delicious! The bittersweet matcha whipped cream topped with cold or hot milk makes a great comforting drink that can be easily made at home.

For the matcha lovers, you can give this frothy whipped matcha latte a shot if you’re feeling for a switch on your daily matcha drink routine.

WHAT IS DALGONA MATCHA?

To put it simply, Dalgona Matcha is a dupe of the Dalgona coffee where the instant coffee mix is replaced with matcha powder. But after much research, we found that replacing instant coffee mix with matcha powder will not give you the same effect.

You will have to incorporate ingredients such as heavy cream, egg whites or aquafaba (liquid from chickpeas) to yield the fluffiness of the whipped matcha. If you’re a vegan looking to try this recipe, using aquafaba would make a great dairy alternative.

We came across  Julie & Duy’s  Dalgona matcha latte recipe which showed two ways of making the whipped matcha latte – one using egg whites, and the other using heavy cream. We decided to make the matcha whipped cream with heavy cream by incorporating the directions from  Honeysuckle’s  recipe. It yields a light, yet rich creamy taste, and it’s so much easier to make!

In this Dalgona Matcha recipe, you will only need five ingredients—heavy cream, matcha powder, milk, sugar, and a little bit of vanilla extract for some flavor. We also recommend using a mixer or a battery operated frother to make the whipped matcha. It would take a lot of time and power to whip up the matcha by hand to achieve the fluffy and velvety consistency.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED MATCHA BLEND TO MAKE DALGONA MATCHA?

For this Dalgona Matcha latte recipe, we recommend using a good culinary grade matcha. Due to the more pronounced bittersweet taste in culinary grade matcha blends, the sweetness from the milk and the added sugar in the whipped matcha will not completely cancel out the matcha flavor.

Our new Latte Blend Premium Culinary Grade Matcha makes the perfect choice for this recipe as it’s both vibrant green and has a strong matcha flavor.
