California Proposition 65
What is California Proposition 65?
If you’re ordering our products in California, you may see a Proposition 65 warning under our product listing or on the packaging.
California Proposition 65 is a California law that requires businesses to provide a warning when a product may expose consumers to certain chemicals that California has identified as potentially causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The list includes more than 900 chemicals, some of which occur naturally in the environment like soil, water and plants.
Why does this apply to matcha?
Trace amounts of naturally occurring substances, including lead, can be found in soil, water, and plants. Since matcha is made from tea leaves grown in the environment, trace amounts may naturally occur.
A Proposition 65 warning does not mean that the product is unsafe. It means that the product may contain a chemical covered by California’s Proposition 65 requirements.
Under Proposition 65, a warning is required when daily exposure to lead exceeds 0.5 micrograms. This threshold is nearly 1,000 times lower than the amount associated with reproductive harm under federal standards.
We provide this warning to comply with California regulations.
