Article: Why matcha can be bad for you
Why matcha can be bad for you
You know those big Venti-sized matcha lattes with whipped cream from Starbucks? They’ve got a lot going on: 43 grams of sugar, 9 gras of fat, and 320 calories. Surprisingly, they pack more sugar, fat and calories than a can of classic Coke !
Now, hold on a sec. Matcha itself is supposed to be good for you, right?
It’s true, but when your matcha latte is loaded with that much sugar and fat, it's not a health booster at all.
Why?
Why do some matcha lattes turn into sugary bombs? Do we just have a sweet tooth, or is there more to it?
People think matcha is bitter and overcompensate with sweetener
Well, one big reason is that some matcha can be very bitter.
Cheaper, lower-grade matcha can taste like biting into a bitter pill, so people load them up with sweeteners and creamers to make them palatable.
Scrolling through social media, you'll be amazed (or maybe shocked) by the stuff people add to their matcha lattes.
We're talking about four, or even five pumps of syrup!
And there are "instant matcha latte" products out there that are basically 90% sugar. Yikes!
Good quality matcha is not bitter
But fear not, there’s a simple solution: opt for good quality matcha.
High-quality matcha isn’t bitter like its cheaper counterparts.
It's much smoother, not fishy-smelling, free of any unpleasant bitterness, and overall a much better experience.
That means: you don't need to add sweeteners or flavored creamers to mask the bad notes.
Good quality matcha tastes great even with just a little sweetener and a splash of creamer!
Sure, it might cost a bit more, but trust us, it’s worth every penny.
Our ceremonial grade matcha, for instance, is so mild and balanced that many of our customers enjoy it straight up with just water or ice!
Editor's Note: We offer different kinds of matcha from various tea regions of Japan. Each of them have slightly different tasting notes.
If you're keen to make the switch, we recommend getting one of our sampler packs. It's just $5 + $5 for shipping and has 6 servings (3 types) of matcha. It even comes with a $10 gift card for your subsequent purchase.
Why good quality matcha is worth every penny
Now, we know what you’re thinking. "But isn’t good matcha expensive?"
Well, yes and no. While it might seem pricier upfront, just a little is enough for a cup of matcha.
In fact, the difference in cost per serving between our Superior Blend Matcha and a cheaper alternative is only about 20 cents.
Why take a hit to your long-term health for the sake of saving a few cents today? Not worth it.
When your matcha is already delicious on its own, you don’t need to load it up with junk.
Just a splash of milk and a bit of sweetener can take it to the next level without overdoing it.
A Matcha Latte Recipe with our Superior Blend Matcha
- 1-2 tsp matcha powder (adjust based on desired strength)
- 2 oz/60ml water
- 7 oz/200ml milk
- 1 tsp powdered brown sugar or equivalent (adjust based on desired sweetness)
Mix the matcha, water and brown sugar. Then add milk and stir.
A tasty matcha latte that's not bitter at all and with just a fraction of the sugar and calories of a commercial matcha latte.

Brittany (Purchased on Amazon):
“I have had many brands and this one from Naoki Matcha was exceptional. The color, flavor, feel… what a great experience! No need for cream or sugar; naturally a sweet flavor. I am happy with my purchase and pleased I bought 2 bags. Happy tea drinking!”
Linari (Purchased on Amazon):
"I really love how there's so little bitterness and astringency that you can drink it straight without sugar or anything else and still enjoy it. And it makes a very decadent matcha latte if you're willing to (almost sacrilegiously) use this grade with milk, lol. Good umami and a 'nuttiness' ++”
Jeanette Hudgeons (Purchased on Amazon):
“For years I have tried to switch to a tea instead of coffee that gave me energy. Not only was the taste smooth and delicious without sugar, but the energy with no crash like coffee was worth every penny.”
If you're curious to see the difference, we’ve got a sampler program where you can try three types of matcha for just $10 ($5 sample cost + $5 shipping to anywhere in the US).
You get a total of six servings of matcha.
Plus, we throw in a $10 gift card for your next purchase. It’s a win-win!
So, enjoy your matcha guilt-free. Choose quality over quantity, and your body will thank you in the long run. Cheers to good health and great taste!
