Make matcha affogato at home effortlessly

A scoop of ice cream spiked in a warm splash of our matcha yields a nice bittersweet contrast, with a subtle hint of umami. 

Here’s a simple matcha dessert recipe that you can whip up and enjoy in less than 5 minutes. A delightfully indulgent treat for special occasions.  

Affogato is a classic Italian dessert, usually two common ingredients: espresso and ice cream. The simple dessert is usually served by pouring a hot shot of espresso over the cold ice cream. The bitter tones of the espresso and sweetness from the creamy ice cream pairs the perfect fusion of flavors which makes it a decadent treat!  

For this matcha affogato recipe, we first make a simple matcha shot. You will not need to use the highest quality matcha since the sweetness of the ice cream will overwhelm the subtler flavors. It would also make your matcha affogato quite expensive.

What we recommend is matcha that is good enough for daily drinking. Versatile blends like our Superior Blend Matcha or Organic First Spring Blend Matcha would be good candidates for matcha affogato. Because these matcha blends pair well with milk and are great for matcha lattes , they tend to also pair well with the sweet creaminess in ice cream.

They are also relatively inexpensive and if you’re new to matcha, a matcha affogato is a fun way to experience the classic matcha flavors in a friendly, non-intimidating way.  

For this recipe, you will need only matcha, ice cream and water. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can switch up with other flavored ice creams such as green tea, chocolate or peppermint, or even add your own sprinkle of toppings for more fun. Personally, our favorite is still classic vanilla ice cream.

The first step is to make the matcha shot. If you do not have a bamboo whisk, you may use a metal whisk to mix the matcha until it has the consistency of melted chocolate. We love serving matcha affogatos in a glass so our guests are able to watch the matcha shot spread over the ice cream as you pour over!

Ingredients

• Vanilla ice cream (or any of your preferred flavor)
• 1 tsp matcha powder
• 1.5 oz/45ml of water at a temperature of 175F (80C)

Directions 

1. Measure out 1 tsp matcha powder and 1.5 oz/45ml of water at 175F (80C) into a bowl and whisk until clumps are completely dissolved.
